DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NOVUS ORDO?
The Mass We All Participate In
“You attend it every Sunday… but do you truly know what it is?”
Many Catholics go to Mass every week.
They listen…
They respond…
They receive Holy Communion.
But if you ask:
“What kind of Mass do you attend?”
Most people pause.
The answer is simple…
It is called the Novus Ordo.
1. WHAT DOES “NOVUS ORDO” MEAN?
“Novus Ordo” simply means “New Order.” It refers to the form of the Mass promulgated after the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. It is more properly called the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, and it is the most widely celebrated form of Mass in the Catholic Church today.
2. WHAT MAKES THE NOVUS ORDO DIFFERENT?
The Novus Ordo introduced certain developments to help the faithful participate more fully:
*Use of local languages (alongside Latin)
*More Scripture readings (expanded lectionary)
*Greater audible participation by the congregation
Yet, despite these developments, the essence of the Mass remains unchanged.
3. WHAT REMAINS THE SAME?
Even with these reforms, the heart of the Mass is exactly the same:
*The sacrifice of Christ
*The Real Presence in the Eucharist
*The structure of the liturgy
As taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1367), the Mass is the same sacrifice of Calvary made present, not something new or different in essence.
4. IS THE NOVUS ORDO A “MODERN INVENTION”?
No. While the form was restructured, it is deeply rooted in ancient liturgical tradition. The Church did not create a new Mass, but rather renewed the existing one for clearer participation and understanding.
5. CAN THE MASS BE MODIFIED FREELY?
This is where clarity becomes important.
The Church allows certain adaptations, but not unlimited creativity. The celebration of the Mass is governed by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which ensures unity, reverence, and fidelity.
No individual has authority to change the Mass according to personal preference.
6. WHERE DOES THE IDEA OF “CLOWN MASS” COME IN?
You may have heard of “clown Mass” -a term used to describe unusual or theatrical liturgical experiments in some places. These are not part of the Novus Ordo, nor are they approved expressions of the Mass. They are often cited as examples of misunderstanding the purpose of liturgical participation.
7. THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
It is important not to confuse the two:
*The Novus Ordo = the Church’s official and approved form of Mass
*“Clown Mass” = a label for inappropriate or exaggerated practices
One is rooted in the Church’s authority and tradition…
The other reflects deviation from it.
IN SUMMARY… KNOW WHAT YOU CELEBRATE
The Novus Ordo is not just “the Mass you attend”…
It is the Church’s living liturgy.
It calls us to:
*Participate with understanding
*Worship with reverence
*Remain faithful to what the Church teaches
Today, reflect:
“Do I understand the Mass… or do I only attend it?”
…and let that deepen your love for the Eucharist
“The more you understand the Mass… the more you encounter Christ.”
